The Mount Holyoke campus is an ideal setting for environmental learning and exploration. Students work with senior research associate Dr. Leszek A. Bledzki to monitor weather, water flow, water quality, forest composition, and invasive species. Dr. Bledzki and others have collected data related to the College's biodiversity and natural history, Prospect Hill forest monitoring, climate and water quality.

    Weather monitoring data were collected with the Davis weather station during years (2002-2009) and Onset Hobo – 2003. The Davis station recorded a variety of parameters including the following: barometric pressure, evapotranspiration, outside humidity, dew point, rainfall (daily, storm, monthly, yearly), rain rate, solar radiation, outside temperature, heat index, UV index, UV dose, wind direction, wind speed and wind chill, and soil temperature and moisture at depths of 5 cm, 20 cm and 60 cm. The stations collect data every ten minutes using a cable that links the Vantage Pro console to the Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS). The ISS unit has the following components: rain collector, anemometer vane, wind cups, UV, solar radiation sensors, and soil temperature and moisture. The Onset Hobo weather station is a research-grade data-logging system, known for performing reliably in the field year after year. HOBO weather stations use sensors for measuring air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, rainfall, soil moisture, solar radiation, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, and soil temperature and moisture. The stations collect data every ten minutes and store them by data-logger. The data were periodically (usually in monthly intervals) downloaded from both types of stations (Davis and HOBO) placed at the same spot of the deciduous forest stand of Prospect Hill.

    2002 Water Quality Data II

    Continuous monitoring of water quality (using YSI 66000) from 7/3/2002 to 9/1/2002 at sites: 4 - Cat House, 5 - Lower Lake and 6 - below the Lower Lake. Data was collected with the help of Dr. Peter Houlihan. The YSI 66000 collects information such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, blue/green algae content and other nutrient contents. Samples were taken bimonthly as weather allowed.

    Continuous monitoring of water quality (using YSI 66000) from 10/01/2002 to 11/25/2002 above the Cathouse Dam. The YSI 66000 collects information such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, blue/green algae content and other nutrient contents. Samples were taken bimonthly as weather allowed. YSI – Continuous Sampling Log: 10/18/02 - removed at 11:45 – did not stop logging, returned at 12:15; 10/18/02 - removed at 12:48-stopped logging, returned at 2:30; 10/19/02 - removed at 6:56 am, returned 10:30 am; 11/19/02 - removed at 12:40, returned at 1:10: catfish in probe.; 11/25/02 - removed at 9:45 a.m., returned at 10:20 a.m., probes very dirty. Data was collected with the help of Dr. Peter Houlihan.
