Experiences that deepen our passions and stir us in new directions do not happen every day. My internship at a law firm in Boston, MA this summer was one of such experiences. From the opportunities I had, people I met, and tasks I completed, I was able to grow as an individual, gain new knowledge, and develop lifelong skills. The arraignments I witnessed, court hearings I attended, writing legal memorandums, and every learning opportunity I was posed with increased my admiration and knowledge of the legal profession. I expanded my network and developed lasting relationships with talented professionals. Most importantly, my experience equipped me with the courage to take intentional steps and make decisions to help me get to where I want to be. This summer for me, was all about growing, and learning that I can grow in many different directions where I am planted.en_US
Pop culture television shows such as “House of Cards,” “The Good Wife,” and “Law and Order” do not have enough time to paint a full picture of what it means to be a lawyer or policy maker. These shows capture the highs and lows of the profession but often leave out what it takes to achieve real success. What's missing are the skills of crafting well-written memos, the long hours of research, and the effort that goes into producing thought-provoking briefs. This past summer, we embarked on four different journeys that explored various aspects of law and legislation. As a result of these experiences, we are better positioned to understand the realities of practicing law as opposed to what is commonly seen on television.en_US
