A New Haven Department of Police Service (NHPD) general order that establishes NHPD's policies concerning enforcement of federal immigration law. NHPD will not inquire into immigration status unless investigating criminal activity; NHPD will not ask about the immigration status of victims and witnesses; no individual will be detained only on the suspicion that they are “not present legally in the US” or that they have “committed a civil immigration violation”; enforcement of civil immigration law is federal responsibility; NHPD will continue to work with federal authorities over criminal issues.
