2016 World Conservation Congress

The World Conservation Congress, held in Hawaii in 2016, was the team’s fifth event, which was funded by NSF award 1560812. The research team combined ethnographic data from previous collaborative event ethnographies to examine the ways conservation has been reframed over time and space. In continuation of previous CEE events, research subteams again focused on the evolution of marine conservation over time, the politics of knowledge and translation of science, business and biodiversity, natural capital initiatives, and on how appeals to human rights are used to contest market-based approaches.
