Abstract
Secondary exchange students are commonly expected to adapt to their host country and language through a model of "natural" language and culture learning. I unpack the notion of what is considered "natural" in secondary student exchange, arguing that foreign students necessarily adapt through a dynamic process of negotiation with the contradictory and often fragmentary elements of their host culture. Adopting a model which regards students as active agents in their own linguistic as well as cultural maturation, in turn, holds great potential for understanding the intracultural as well as intercultural points of tension within and beyond the boundaries of a given host culture.
