Abstract

Since the discovery of the medieval manuscript of The Book of Margery Kempe in 1934, there has been much scholarly criticism examing the Book. I explore these, and counter that one area has been unnoticed, the manuscript's identification with the monastic themes of conversion, compunction and vestiture. These topics form the underlying theme of the manuscript, and attract the monastic community of Mount Grace, giving the narrative authority, voice and agency.
