Abstract

The cube is the form I worked with this semester. My thesis series includes cubes by themselves and cubes in groups. All of the cubes, regardless of number, have been elaborated on in order to give them a narrative beyond their material existence as geometric shapes. These cubes begin as simple wooden blocks and transform, either by added materials or provided context, into characters playing out my imagination. Although my pedestal-inspired elaborations from the fall semester appear to be a continuation of Minimalism, my work is only in dialogue with Minimalism as a way of claiming its own separate identity. I use repetition to express various underlying themes rather than to enforce an industrial or minimalist aesthetic. Those themes include motion, potential, and transformation.
