Abstract

In the midst of all the talk about the rise of participatory news online, it is worth noting that world communities have historically engaged in socially driven news exchanges. The human impulse for informed dialogue is not a 21st century phenomenon, but has triumphantly extended to the Web. The new media landscape has only reinforced journalism s role in generating dialogue and acting as an engine for public discourse. The digital platform dictates changes in the reception and production of news, demands different business models and reshapes existing relationships in the media ecosystem. But it does not radically change the reader, or distort the goal of journalism to serve the public interest and facilitate conversations among different communities. Aggressive and ethical reporting remains at the heart of democracy.
